Strategy study- creating sensory images
Last month, we collectively kicked off our study of sensory images( http://comprehension-strategies.wikispaces.com/Sensory+Image)! As a whole crew together, we explored an object we had some schema for and focused in on the details of the memory the object reminded us of. We used our fancy "focusing tubes" to really go into our mental images and pull out the details in our sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing and feelings. As we collected from this mental image, we emphasized how these details were coming to life in our head. We wondered what might happen if we applied this strategy to other areas of our schooling. So....ask you student how sensory/mental images are helping them become a better Reader, Writer, Mathematician and Scientist!
This week in Literacy.....We have been working on getting our first piece published in Writing! We created a poem from one of our favorite animals (we even pretended to be them). This Thursday is going to be our celebration where we practice giving good feedback, listening, and reading with fluency.
These works will be on the walls to have wonderful student work decorate our room. In reading we have been going deep and writing about our reading, looking for great language, and why our books make us feel. Our feelings follow that of our characters from joy, contentment, frustration, depression, and anger. When we feel what the characters are feeling we are experiencing empathy and understanding in our reading. Books we have started as a class: Lulu and the Bronto (starbursts) The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate (skittles) |
This week in Science and Mathematics...Our newest unit will reacquaint us with Measurement and Data, as well as Number in Base Ten. We are beginning with the topic of time. Our essential question is How can telling time help me in real world situations? We will explore how we can apply our understanding of time to situations in our real lives that require us to organize and manage time wisely.
The measurement portion of the unit will focus on the metric units of measure in relation to base ten numbers. As always, look for math in everyday life with your child. Our overarching goal is to help students connect with and apply math to their everyday lives and world around them. COMING SOON IN SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES... Our next science unit in entitled "Objects in the Sky". We will kick off this topic with a trip to the planetarium at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on November 18th. We will also begin our inquiry into the history of Denver with a look at photos of some of the historic building around the city. |
TYping Web!
Ms. Frachette has set up our kids with an amazing typing program to help prepare them for the wide world of keyboarding! This will become a part of their weekly homework as well. It is a great way to get kids working towards typing with ease. Follow the link below for a detailed explanation of how to use this tool to it's highest potential!

We have a photo site! If you have this IP address then you can add photos and share them as long as you a member of shutterfly (free). Thanks to all of the parents that have taken photos, and those that will in the future. Have fun looking around and finding your student hard at work (or having fun and learning with friends).

Some of the snacks that I have seen that work great are: (but feel free to be creative)
Pretzels, Popcorn, rice cake, Vegetables, Fruits, Sand-whiches, Granola bar (or other packaged snack food)
